Sequestration of CO2 in a Depleted Oil Reservoir: An Overview
نویسنده
چکیده
Geologic sequestration of CO2 in depleted oil reservoirs, while a complex issue, is thought to be a safe and effective carbon management strategy. This paper provides an overview of a NETLsponsored R&D project to predict and monitor the migration and ultimate fate of CO2 after being injected into a depleted oil reservoir as part of a micropilot scale field experiment. The Queen Formation sandstone, located in the West Pearl Queen field in SE NM, was identified as the CO2 injection site for this project. Core samples of this formation were obtained for lithologic analysis and laboratory experimentation. Preliminary flow simulations were run using this data and suggest that at least 2000 tons of CO2 can be injected into the reservoir over a period of one month. Our planned suite of computer simulations, laboratory tests, field measurements and monitoring efforts will be used to calibrate, modify and validate the modeling and simulation tools. Ultimately, the models and data will be used to predict storage capacity and physical and chemical changes in oil reservoir properties. Science or technology gaps related to engineering aspects of geologic sequestration of CO2 also will be identified in this study.

The rapid growth in natural gas consumption has increased the need for gas storage, in particular in the form of injection into depleted reservoirs. Also, CO2 sequestration into the depleted reservoirs has attracted a large attention recently. However, it is important to ensure that the injection pressure is maintained below a certain limit to avoid unsealing the cap rock or reactivation of any...

Gas reservoirs usually have high recovery due to high mobility and low residual gas saturation, although some of them producing under water-drive mechanism have low recovery efficiency. Encroachment of water into these reservoirs traps considerable amount of gas and increases the maximum residual gas saturation, which results in the reduction of gas and condensate production. Generally, the rec...

Among the options being considered to help mitigate anthropogenic CO2 emissions is carbon sequestration in depleted oil or gas wells, coal seams, and deep underground saline formations. One of the uncertainties that must be addressed with respect to geologic sequestration is the long-term risk associated with storage of large quantities of CO2 in the subsurface. Rapid release of CO2 could occur...

Depleted natural gas reservoirs are promising targets for carbon dioxide sequestration.
